How to Increase Page Rank: Another Google Myth Revealed

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

In the SEO world there is an addiction. Its the green blocks that appear on the google toolbar that is know as Page Rank or PR. Due to the recent update of this counting system, which is powered by Google, its time to review the real understanding of PR. Focus on this mis-information, which, doesnt really help them get a top ranking

Lets look at the base of information that is Google PR. Much has been written and discussed. Google has used PR as a form of ranking and, for a long time is was seen as a major factor of getting results . If you search for increase page rank you will find many articles, features and opinions.

Enter 2007 and beyond, Google Page rank has created services who sell links, based on PR. Some content sites with with good PR are selling focused keyword text links to those who want links, as a way of getting a higher ranking. Google has come out saying this is essentially attempting to buy a ranking to manipulate the search results.

Also submission to search directorys is seen as a valid way of gaining backlinks .Pricing can be based on the PR of the home page. Here is a statement you need to remember:

Google ranks pages not web sites”

Remember when doing submissions to directory sites and more importantly paid listings, it’s the Page Rank of the PAGE that the link is on, that is important. Keeping in mind that it the internal page has a good ranking, it should send traffic to your site too.

It is possible for internal pages to gain a higher page rank than the home page. However keep in mind that if a site has page rank (of some amount) then it is seen as trusted source of information, both by visitors (if they are webmasters) and by Google

So is there a way to increase PR and your ranking?

Firstly dont focus on PR- in can be fickle and misleading. It is subject to Google changing the rules, which they reduced serveral times at least once a year. If you focus on creating reasons for Google search engine spider, to come back, that by itself will help with PR and ranking.

The simplest thing you can do is change and update your pages. Keeping your pages fresh will be seen as new content and bring back the google spider. The more this occurs, the more likely your Page Rank will increase.

This is why blogs (in general) do well in natural search results because they provide regular changing information.

This may seem blunt, but Page Rank is not the key to rankings. You are best focused on building a site that is 100% search engine friendly and focusing on getting links you cant go wrong.

Clipping from The Auckland Star, 23rd March 1954 detailing the new rank for the superintendent of the Naval Dockyard there.

I receive a number of emails from people who are customers and a lot who are not, but could use some advice on how to increase their website`s Google page rank.

So, because my time is limited, and I can not answer the hundreds of emails that I receive, and since today is the start of the New Year, I am beginning my series on tips and tricks for increasing your Google page rank.

I think you will enjoy this series, and most importantly use the tips and tricks I provide to help your website take off.

Lets start with the basics in this series and that is what exactly is the Google page rank and why is it important. The Google page rank or in short called the GPR, is method by which Google ranks the popularity of a website and/or pages on a website. This ranking is handled through Google`s unique and highly classified computer algorithm.

Through this algorithm Google is able to rank and return search results of websites based on what a user enters in the Google search textbox.

Studies and statistics have shown the higher you appear on the search list, the greater chance someone will click the resulting link. For example, lets say you do a search on sneakers and a company comes up as the first link to click. Studies have shown the first link receives the most clicks, followed by the second and so on. The resulting search list was determined by the ranking that combined with the search criteria. The higher your rank as compared to other web sites that meet the same search criteria, the higher your placement will be.

Your goal as a web owner or website administrator is to increase your Google page rank so that your site will appear higher when someone does a search that will meet the criteria of your site.

I know this is a lot of broad based information, however this series will fill in all the gaps and answer all of your questions. I promise. Also feel free to ask me any questions to be answered in a future article in this series.

Now that you know some of the basics, lets get to our first tip. How do you begin to increase that Google page rank?

Start with link exchanging. A link exchange is the matter of you agreeing to post a link on your website pointing back to another website who will do the same. Google looks favorably upon a website when other sites point to it. The more links you have pointing to your site the better off you will be and be able to increase your score.

Keep these few tips in mind when exchanging links. A link exchange is not about your visitors clicking the link to go to another website or vice versa. So do not think that because your link is on another website you will start getting all of their traffic. Chances are you may get some, but that is highly unlikely. The idea is to obtain as many websites as possible to point back to your website (usually your home page) to increase your rank.

Two, keep a separate page of your links. Your website should have a page called links where you display the information of all the websites you have exchanged links with.

Three, your links page should be accessible from your home page so that the Google crawling spiders can find it. That is looked favorable upon.

Four, last but not least, never have more than 50 links to other websites on a given page. Anything over 50 links to a page and Google sees that as being a link farm, and decreases the score of those links. Once you reach 50, start a new links page, and then link the next link page from the first page. Continue this same process for each new links page you need to create.

For example, our website has exchanged links with over 3,500 websites. So we have over 70 pages of links. This of course was done over a period of time, and has increased our page rank tremendously.

In our next article in this series, we will talk about how exchanging links with websites that have already established a sizable Google page rank, has greater benefits.

New Methods to Improve Your Page Rank

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

It’s getting tougher and tougher to rank in search engines for certain keyphrases. In one sense this is good news: it means that when you plug a keyphrase into Google it means that you won’t get a garbage site. Google doesn’t toughen up its algorithm for calculating page rank just to make site owners suffer: it’s about quality control. This being said, there are news ways to improve your site’s page rank to help you site adapt to the Web 2.0 environment and beyond.

As Google updates its policies, certain practices have become outdated: such as article marketing. It used to be that you could upload the same article to a slew of article directories – either manually or using an article submission service – and you could build up hundreds of inbound links when the article went into syndication. Now Google will discard all of the duplicates and keep one: not even necessarily the one with the highest page rank. This can still bring in traffic from different article sites, but it cannot improve page rank.

Blog commenting is another one that has lost some of its usefulness. A lot of new site owners have never heard of the concept of nofollow. The nofollow tag is a tag put on links that looks like rel=”nofollow” tag. So the code would end up looking like: < a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.yoursite.com” target=” rel=”nofollow” >. What this will do is ensure that Google spiders will not follow the link to your site: i.e. it will not affect page rank. Again, the link can improve traffic, but not your page rank.

Better Methods to Increase Page Rank

With these common pitfalls out of the way, what are some good ways to improve page rank given Google’s new criteria.

1. Identify Nofollow links. Firefox, for example, has a dofollow plugin that will reveal which links on a site are dofollow or nofollow (blue for dofollow, red for nofollow). This is a good way to test a site’s comment section. There are also dofollow directories, which link sites that have nofollow deactivated.

2. Write unique article content. It may be difficult to write ten different posts about the same topic, but it’s recommended. You can then upload ten different articles to ten different article sites. Ten quality backlinks is much better than one. More time put in = more page rank value.

3. On your blog, don’t just write basic information that may be covered elsewhere. Write topically: these are the articles that are the most likely to go viral. People like new news, not a new version on an old topic – however well-written it might be.

4. Get yourself the Google Adwords tool to determine the most marketable keywords in your niche: put these keywords in a title tag and content, without overdoing it. These older SEO tactics still work. You’d be surprised just how many sites still have a title that include a number, not the title of the post.

5. Register with Google Webmaster tools: it will reveal any problems with your HTML code, such as broken links. It will also help with faster spidering of your site.

6. Become a social networker. One thing that is overlooked about social networks is their page rank. It’s not just about traffic from the network. Your Digg link could rank very highly for an important title and post – well before your own site. The more social networks you belong to, the more chance one of those results will show up in SERPs. These links will also improve the page rank of internal pages of your URL – very important to overall page rank health.

7. Become an avid forum poster. Just having a link to your site in your forum profile and signature is helpful – but the more active you are in the forums, the more page rank strength you will send to your profile. Forum signatures are also great for traffic. See tip #1 for revealing which forums use nofollow or dofollow links.

8. Manually add your site to directories. It’s tedious but it’s still important for your page rank. Don’t rely on automated systems because a barrage of site directory links all at once can get you red-flagged by Google. Also, important: write different keywords and site descriptions before submitting your site. If you use the same description over and over this can be seen as duplicate content.

Finally, you should have a plan for all of the above strategies. Even if you have a modest goal of only five new links a day: through comments, directories (there are thousands of potential directories), forum posts, and so on, this will build up over time. By the time of the next Google page rank update, which occurs every three months or so, you will see positive results of your public page rank climbing higher.

Google Page Rank

William Shi says you will see results sooner with Traffic Equalizer if you have a good Google page rank
Page Rank

Many people are suggesting that google is currently updating the page rank of each site, this is what can be seen on the google toolbar and is basically a rating out of ten for each website. From reading some of the messages on the search engine forums, different people are reporting changes where as other people as of yet have seen no changes. It is reported that by the middle of July in 2006 this update should be visible on all data-centers, however with google you never can tell as they seem to like to keep people guessing.

In reality many people think that this will have little effect on the over all search engine ranking position of each site as they believe that google has already factored these changes on a daily or weekly basis in its search results, but that it only shows the new page rank of each site on its toolbar around every three months.

So what is all of the fuss about you may be thinking. Why are so many people always so eager for the next google page rank update to take place? In my opinion it could be for two reasons:

Fear of seeing a lower overall page rank

Not all webmasters are able to spend as much time as they would like to, in promoting their own website. Having a good page rank is like having their site recognised as a good and worthy site and they fear that if they were to be lowered that this could have a negative affect on their sales etc. They may think that people may be tempted to buy their products if their site is classed as a page rank six, however that they may think twice if it was only a page rank four.

Expectation of a higher page rank

Other webmasters who put in a lot of work promoting their site are hoping and even expecting to see an increase in page rank for their site. If they achieve this, all of their hard work will have been worthwhile and it will act as an inspiration for them to continue promoting their sites in the same way. If they see no changes or even worse a lowering of page rank, it will show them that they may need to change the way that they are promoting their site.

Is page rank important?

I have read many articles and read many messages on different search engine forums which suggest that their is too much emphasis placed on the importance of page rank. In a way I agree but I do however think that having a high page rank is of benefit. Page rank is not the be all and end all, and people should not become too angry if they are not able to for example obtain a page rank five straight away. I believe hard work pays off and that a website should be seen as a long term project. If you stick by the rules, there is no reason why within a few years your site should not be rewarded with a respectable page rank value. I think that too many people who bring out new sites are trying to get rich quick, obtain far too many backward links too quickly and see the whole thing as a sprint rather than a marathon.

Like most people, I am hoping to see some positive results from this page rank update, however I aim to stick around to see another one hundred updates, therefore I will not be shedding any tears if a couple of my sites go down a grade or two.

Page Rank Improvement: Free and Paid Strategies

Page Rank

Photo Rank: #1

Thanks Pari for the Pose! :)

…don’t know if the title suits this photo :D

So why is page rank improvement so important to your online success? Principally because the higher your website or blog appears in the free search results the more you’ll be seen as an authority in your niche, the more traffic you’ll get, and the more money you’ll make.

So let’s look at some ways we can legitimately improve page rank without any ‘black hat’, ‘smoke and mirrors’ nonsense that will annoy the search engines:

We should break the subject of page rank improvement into ‘on page’ and ‘off page’ methods. ‘On page’ means anything we do to our own web pages or blog posts.

Firstly we need to have selected a domain name that has relevance and piques the interest of our target market.

Secondly, we need to include our keyword for each page or post into the title tag of that page, and preferably the description tag as well. The title tag in particular is essential in telling the engines what your page is about. Don’t be clever or cryptic with it. Stick your main keyword in there.

You should always include a sitemap page, to help the search engines spider your site or blog, and ideally create a site structure where no page is more than two clicks from the home page.

‘Off page’ techniques for page rank improvement could include the following. Write articles on your subject, optimised around a particular relevant keyword term, including a link back to the relevant page on your site in the ‘resource box’ which displays your keyword in the linking or ‘anchor’ text.

This conveys authority on to your site regarding this specific keyword. You can use these same articles on your blog.

Cultivate some incoming links from sites with a higher page rank than yours. If you install the Google Tool Bar (it’s free, just Google the phrase and follow the instructions) you’ll see the page rank of every site you visit. If your site is ranked ‘1′, then an incoming link from a ranked ‘3′ site creates huge credibility and instant page rank improvement for your site.

You can also buy text links. It’s perfectly legitimate, although buying links from sites ranked 8 or 9 can run into thousands. See if you can find sites in your niche with a page rank one or two higher than yours and if you’re happy with the cost, go for it. Google the term ‘link exchanges’ for some options. It can make a huge and immediate difference to your page rank. I would only suggest this if your site or blog is well monetized so you can offset the cost of the link.

Some more ways to create backlinks and page rank improvement would include posting on other people’s (relevant) blogs with a link back to your site in the ‘signature’. You can also post regularly in related forums, again with your link in the signature.

All these techniques and others will create a drip feed of page rank improvement and bigger traffic to your site. The opportunity of throwing some cash at it to make it go faster is there though, if you’re up for it!

Search Engine Page Ranking ? Proven Techniques to Improve Your Webpage Rank

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Google Juice Results
Page Rank
Offline layout like online! The mysterious Google Juice.

Search engine page ranking is an important aspect of getting traffic to your webpage.  This is simply because most traffic comes by way of the internet and the top 3 search grab about 98% of the prospects right off the bat.  So if your site is at the bottom of page 1 or lost somewhere between pages 3 and 100, chances are that no one is going to see it.  That would be a shame if you have valuable information that can help a customer.

If your page is one of the unfortunate one sitting outside of the Big Kahunas showing in the number 1, 2, or 3 spots, it time to make some changes in order to improve your search engine page ranking.  But do you know what’s necessary to make that happen?

Here are some proven techniques that once completed will help improve where your webpages sit in the search engines.

First you’ll want to address some on-page items listed below.

Title tags – Write the title tag on your page so that it includes the targeted keyword or keywords you are trying to rank for.  Do not overstuff this tag.  The title should make sense to the reader while still trying to maximize your keyword usage.
Meta description – Write a description telling the search engines what your page is about.  Once again, use your keyword(s) in your description.  Make the description understandable and compelling to the searcher so that he will click on your site while maximizing your keyword usage.
anchor text – This technique simply means to make your targeted keyword the clickable link.  HTML code is necessary to do this but very easy to do as well.  The code looks like this:

keyword and your webpage address goes between       the apostophe’s while your targeted keyword is placed after the greater than symbol and before the less than symbol.

alt image tag – This tag is similar to anchor text as it is the text the search engines see when referencing an image.  The html code for this tag is: url” border=”0″ alt=”<em>some_text</em>” />.  As you can see, your webpage URL is placed between the quotes and your targeted keyword is placed between the quotes after the alt= indicator.

After addressing some on-page changes to improve your search engine page ranking, next you’ll want to address some off-page items.  This off-page work is performed to tell Google, Yahoo, and the other search engine how important your page is and build some trust with those engines.

Blog comments – post comments on relative sites’ blog posts.  These comments should be constructive and beneficial while avoiding the spamming of other people’s blogs.  I mention this for two reasons.  One is that you don’t want that done to your site and the second is that your trying to establish trust and you want your comment approved.  Spam comments will achieve neither of those goals.
social bookmarking – bookmark your webpage.  Bookmarking lets other members of a social site you are using know about your bookmark, ultimately bringing traffic.  Those viewers get to rate your submission and can increase your trust factor when multiple rave reviews are given about your bookmark.
Video – Using video with a link back to your site and your keywords in your description of your video creates backlinks.  Google and all the search engines use backlinks to help analyze a webpage’s popularity and authority.  Plus, searchers like video.  In many cases, video can obtain a high rank itself in the search engine for a targeted keyword.
Write articles – Like videos, writing articles help create backlinks.  Plus, article writing can help give readers useful content causing them not only want to view your site but take action on it as well doing things like, taking part in polls or writing comments.  Search engine page ranking improves when Google and others see activity on a site.  It’s an indication to them that users like the site and find it useful.

Apply these techniques when looking to improve upon the placement of your page in the search engines.  They have been proven many times over to help increase search engine page ranking.
